Nicoll Lecture

JAMES HENDERSON NICOLL (1863–1921)

James Nicoll was a pioneering paediatric Surgeon in Glasgow and is regarded as the ‘Father of Day Surgery’. He published a series of almost 9000 paediatric day cases in the British Medical Journal in 1909. The surgery of infancy. Br Med J. 1909; 2: 753-756.
James Nicoll, great technical surgeon, radical thinker, popular teacher and charming gentleman was truly the founder of modern day surgery.
The concepts he espoused were radical in their day yet accord well with the principles of day surgery 100 years later.
The invitation to give the Nicoll lecture at the biennial IAAS International Congress is one of the highest honours we can bestow on a colleague.
